What If Pennsylvania Is Not The First State Where You Get Accused Of A Sexual Offense?

States_NorthWest

Anyone with a prior criminal conviction knows that the social stigma lasts well beyond when you have paid off the debts you incurred to pay your criminal fines and long after your last meeting with your probation officer. Every time you fill out a job application, your heart sinks whenever you must answer the question about whether you have ever been convicted of a felony, even though the application form assures you that the mere presence of a felony conviction on your record does not automatically bar you from eligibility for the job. No one feels the stigma more acutely than people who have pleaded guilty to sex offense charges or been convicted of these offenses at trial. The sex offender registration requirements vary according to the offense, but the requirement to list your name on the registry always lasts longer than the prison or probation sentence. Only the most serious crimes warrant the most visible forms of registration, but if the court has ordered you to register as a sex offender, you are always at risk of new criminal penalties for failure to comply with the requirements. If you are new to Pennsylvania and are worried about your old sex offense conviction causing you new legal troubles, contact a Pittsburgh sex crime lawyer.

Sex Offender Registration Requirements Can Follow You From One Place to Another

For as long as you are required to stay on the sex offender registry, you must keep your registration up to date. This means notifying law enforcement when you move to a new address. If you are registered as a sex offender in another state and you move to Pennsylvania, you must register as a sex offender in Pennsylvania within three days of your move. To register, go to the police department of the city where you have moved to and notify them of the conviction and registration requirement in the state where your conviction took place. Every time you move within Pennsylvania or to another state, you must update your registration. Failure to do this can lead to new criminal charges.

In the News

In March 2026, a man was arrested in connection to several incidents of indecent exposure in Riverview Park. Several women complained separately to police that, while they were walking alone in the park, the defendant pulled up to them in his car and asked for directions. When the women got close to the car, the defendant allegedly exposed himself, and the women fled. After his arrest, police discovered that he is on the sex offender registry in Texas. News reports did not say how long he had been in Pennsylvania before his arrest.
