9 defendants facing charges in drug crimes case

A criminal investigation in Philadelphia has reportedly led to the arrest of nine adults who were allegedly conspiring to distribute drugs throughout the city’s suburbs. Authorities report that they seized 8 pounds of marijuana, more than 20 grams of cocaine and thousands of dollars of cash, in addition to other substances, during a recent raid. The ring was allegedly spearheaded by two young men, ages 18 and 25, who are now facing drug crimes allegations in connection with the incident. Officials say the two men who spearheaded the drug ring allegedly worked with seven other adults and two minors in the Philadelphia area. The group provided cocaine, marijuana and Ecstasy to students attending area high schools and colleges. The younger defendant reportedly worked closely with the high-school dealers, providing them with a significant amount of inventory. Courtroom documents indicate that this may have been a sophisticated operation, and those behind the ring were taking steps to ensure that their business was not threatened. Officers say they seized several weapons, for example, during the search of one defendant’s home. Those included modest handguns, all the way up to an AR-15 assault rifle. The older defendant is being held on a $1 million bail, according to reports. He has been charged in a 79-page indictment in connection with the alleged drug crimes. The younger defendant has made bail. Attorneys for that young man say that he was caught up in the scheme because he was suffering from depression and other personal problems. It is not clear whether the younger defendant had a criminal history, but attorneys in the case seem to be implying that he was hoodwinked into involvement in the alleged crimes. First-time offenders may have different legal options when facing long-term consequences because of drug crimes. A criminal defense attorney may be able to provide more information about potential strategies to deal with drug crimes penalties for those who are facing their first criminal charges.
