Teacher charged in alleged DUI death of driver

A woman from Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, is facing drunk driving charges in connection with a fatal car accident in the area. The woman must mount a DWI defense against the allegations, which state that the 30-year-old high school teacher was intoxicated when she collided with another vehicle, reportedly killing a 72-year-old man who was delivering flowers. Official reports show that the woman was driving a sedan with her 2-year-old child as a passenger when she inadvertently ran a stop sign and plowed into the van carrying the victim on Aug. 6. The crash ultimately caused the van to topple over, pinning the man and crushing him to death. He was declared dead at the scene of the collision, according to news reports. The woman’s 2-year-old son suffered minor injuries in the crash. Officers in the case said they thought the woman smelled of alcohol at the time of the 10:30 a.m. collision. In addition, her behavior indicated that she might have been intoxicated. A cup found on the floor of the woman’s Prius smelled like alcohol, as well. Further evaluation determined that the woman’s blood-alcohol content was barely over the legal limit, registering at 0.098 percent; the legal driving limit in Pennsylvania is 0.08 percent. The woman reportedly had Ativan, a heavy anti-anxiety medication, in her system at the time of the crash, which could have exacerbated her alleged intoxication. The woman’s attorney was able to secure for her a non-cash bond, which means that she was able to leave on her own accord but must pay $100,000 if she flees the area. Her preliminary hearing will be held on Sept. 17. In addition, the woman’s attorney said he had confidence that the local court system would resolve the case expeditiously. Even though the woman appears to have made some questionable driving choices, she deserves a fair proceeding that evaluates the charges without bias. Her qualified attorney seems committed to protecting her rights in the case.
