How drunk is your county?

Pennsylvania is widely regarded as a blue-collar state, especially here in Western PA. We are seen by the rest of the country as a state full of people who work hard and sometimes party hard. Pennsylvania is also one of the strictest states when it comes to drinking laws and DUI laws.

A recent study done by County Health Rankings and Roadmaps has determined the fourteen counties here in PA where residents drink the most. The results will likely surprise you as Philadelphia and Allegheny Counties did not make the list.

The list is broken down into two statistics: adults who report excessive drinking and bars per ten thousand people. After compiling the information, this is what researchers discovered.

  • Western PA’s Somerset County comes in at fourteen with 20% of adults admitting to excessive drinking and 4.78 bars per every ten thousand residents.
  • Another Southwestern PA county, Greene County, comes in at thirteen with 20% of adults admitting to excessive drinking and 5.47 bars per every ten thousand residents.
  • Luzerne County in Northeast PA is twelfth with 20% of adults admitting to excessive drinking and 9.79 bars per every ten thousand people.
  • Huntingdon County, found in Central PA, is eleventh with 21% of adults admitting to excessive drinking and 2.4 bars per capita.
  • Delaware County is the state’s far southeastern county and is tenth with 21% of adults admitting to drinking and 4.06 for every ten thousand residents.
  • Jefferson County in Western PA is ninth with 21% of adults admitting to excessive drinking and 5.78 bars per every ten thousand residents.
  • Another Western PA county, Armstrong County, is eighth with 21% of adults admitting to excessive drinking and 6.85 bars per capita.
  • Wyoming County in the northeast part of the state is seventh with 22% of adults admitting to overdrinking and 2.13 bars per every ten thousand residents.
  • Warren County in Northwest PA is sixth with 22% of adults reporting to excessive drinking and 7.97 bars per capita.
  • Monroe County is Eastern PA is fifth with 24% of adults admitting to excessive drinking and 3.97 bars per every ten thousand people.
  • Fulton County in South Central PA is fourth with 24% of adults admitting to overdrinking and 4.06 bars for every ten thousand residents.
  • Elk County in Northwest PA is third. 24% of adults in Elk County admit to excessive drinking and there are 7.86 bars for every ten thousand people.
  • Lackawanna County in Pennsylvania’s northeast section ranks second with 24% of adults admitting to over-drinking and 8.12 bars per capita.
  • And the “drunkest county” award goes to Clinton County in Central PA where 25% of adults admit to excessive drinking and there are 7.85 bars for every ten thousand residents.

All jokes aside, drinking penalties, especially for drunk driving or driving under the influence of drugs is taken very seriously in Pennsylvania.
