Sexting scandal among students at North Allegheny

It seems not a day goes by that we don’t hear about some new sexting scandal among some high-ranking authority figure. But what happens when these messages are sent between high school students? This week, the McCandless Police Department is investigating whether or not students at North Allegheny committed sexual misconduct. NA’s acting superintendent sent email to parents on Tuesday morning. The email says that school authorities "recently became aware of a situation involving 9th and 10th graders at North Allegheny Intermediate High School, allegedly involving inappropriate photos and sexual acts between students in which some students may have been victimized." McCandless’s chief of police said that NA called his department last Thursday. He said that there is no indication that teachers or other school officials are involved. It is believed that the incident occurred between two, or possibly three students. All students being interviewed are being treated as victims, according to police. Police said that the incidents, which involved sexual contact and the transmission of photographs, may have occurred on school property and elsewhere. Police say it will be a "complex and lengthy investigation." None of the students’ names will be released unless charges are filed in adult court, which will most likely not be the case. The school’s director said that the school board knows about the situation, but is not commenting. The Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office has not been contacted by the school district or police about being involved in the investigation.
