Pittsburgh Woman Arrested After Attempting To Evade Jail Sentence

Arrested14

The county jail is an unpleasant place, to be sure, but if there is anything to be said in its defense, it is that no one stays there for very long.  Jail sentences are usually for misdemeanor convictions, and the sentence usually lasts less than two years.  No one serves a life sentence in a county jail.  State prison and federal prison are much worse, although conditions vary widely among prisons because of their various security levels.  Minor crimes can spiral into major punishments in some cases, even if you are doing your best just to get through your sentence and then move on with your life.  If you injured someone in a fight, a Pittsburgh assault charges lawyer can help protect you from excessive punishments and can help you avoid mistakes that could complicate your case.

McDonald’s Employee Seriously Wounded Customer While Trying to Break Up Fight

One day in November 2019, Roneese Davis and Kaniya Martin were at work at a McDonald’s in Pittsburgh, when they noticed Marc Conn and his girlfriend, who were dining in the restaurant, arguing with the customers at the next table.  When Davis and Martin tried to intervene, Conn became belligerent toward them, and the fight eventually continued outside.  At one point, Davis struck Conn in the back of the head, causing him to lose consciousness.  He later regained consciousness, but he has been paralyzed since the accident.  Martin was charged with simple assault; she pleaded guilty and served six months of probation.  Davis pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault and simple assault.  At trial, the jury acquitted her of the aggravated assault charge but convicted her of the simple assault charge.

In the News

After her trial, the court sentenced Davis to 11-and-a-half months to 23 months in jail and ordered her to report to the Allegheny County Jail on March 28 to begin her sentence.  Davis, 27, did not report to the jail, and authorities listed her as a most wanted fugitive.  At about 7:00 p.m. on May 20, deputies found Davis, 27, walking from a residence toward a parked vehicle on Kennedy Avenue on the North Side of Pittsburgh.  They arrested her without incident and brought her to the jail, where she is currently serving her sentence.

The TribLive website did not say whether Davis is facing any additional charges in connection to failing to comply with her sentence.  If you have received an unjustly harsh sentence, being a fugitive from the law is much riskier than working with a criminal defense lawyer to appeal your sentence.  If you have been unfairly convicted, you can also appeal your conviction.
